Our wellbeing is shaped by so many parts of who we are: our background, identity, faith, sexuality, class, and the environments we move through. No two experiences are the same. Within London, people come together from every country and walk of life. London highlights the different sides of identity; an exciting mix of where you come from, who you are, and who you hope to be.
These experiences coupled with often overlapping facets of personal identity, can make it harder for some to ask for help, whilst also giving others the strength to reach out. For some, talking about mental health is routine; for others, it remains unspoken. Even the idea of “mental health” itself can vary, is it happiness, resilience, or simply just having the ability to keep going? We know it matters, but for many, that understanding isn’t always a given. That’s what intersectionality helps us see: the many layers within each of us that shape how we experience the world and our wellbeing within it.
At London Nightline, we hear these complexities every night. Students reaching out, all carrying a mix of pressures and hopes, and our volunteers are here to listen without judgment. Every story matters, and every voice deserves to be heard. Regardless of background, experience, or beliefs about what mental health means, everyone deserves to feel that their struggles are valid and that their words matter.
This World Mental Health Day, we celebrate the diversity that makes London unique and remind one another that there’s no single way to experience or express mental health. What connects us is the simple act of listening and knowing that whatever your story may be, at London Nightline someone will always be ready to listen back.
