It is with deep sadness that we share the news that one of our co-founders, Doreen Whewell, passed away on 28th October 2025. Doreen has been a committed and passionate advocate of London Nightline in her roles as co-founder, trustee and patron.
London Nightline was founded in 1971, guided by the vision Doreen helped to forge that no student should suffer alone and that students could make a difference. We remain committed to this vision and are grateful for the leadership and guidance Doreen has offered for so many years.
Ann Conlon, Honorary President of London Nightline and former Chair of Trustees:
“I first got to know Doreen in 1985 when I was asked to be the first Chair of the newly formed London Nightline steering committee. Doreen had been a founder member of Nightline in 1971 when she was working as a counsellor at Imperial College. She later became a Trustee and a Patron of Nightline. I continued to chair the committee until 2015 when I was given the title of Honorary President.
Doreen remained a delightful friend. She had a wicked sense of humour and over the years we shared many enjoyable lunches and dinners together. She continued to be interested in the work of Nightline and was always supportive and encouraging of young people. It was a privilege to have known her. She will be greatly missed.”
Elliot Gathercole, current Trustee and Coordinator (2015-17):
“Doreen was so welcoming when I first started working at Nightline, a whirlwind of enthusiasm and generosity, and it was such a pleasure to be welcomed by her. Her passion for Nightline and the service it offered was clear and she leaves a significant legacy. She made a real impact on me in the time that I knew her and I know she will be missed by many.”
