Being a student away from home in a strange city like London can be a very polarising experience. It can give you endless opportunities, new unexplored avenues and a vibrant social life, which makes things seem all hunky dory. However, the cascade of assignments and never-ending lectures, all while trying to get in three meals a day and endless ups and downs of life, can make the tides turn for even the most strong-willed. In this constant polarity of life as a student, it's so easy to lose oneself. You might even find yourself alone, despite being in a city of 9.1 million people.
Like so many other students, I found myself in the same situation, and while I was sure there was light at the end of the tunnel, I couldn't find the courage to keep searching for it. Yet, I managed to convince myself to volunteer at London Nightline, even if it was with the intention of adding a line to my resume. However, as the training began, I felt welcomed into a warm community. And as I put in my hours at the cosy little office, it became so much more.
Every call and instant message on the shift instilled the belief that however small, I can still make a difference in others’ lives. The board filled with polaroids of volunteers and sweet messages at the office showed me that I was not alone. All the friends I made, all the anonymous fellow students I managed to help, allowed me to believe that that it was not only me who was going through the trials and tribulations of student life, but so many around me, so many who choose to reach out for help, showing courage that I had struggled to muster. It rekindled my passion for psychology and even brought in a fresh perspective on life.
As Mental Health Awareness Week rolls around, this is my little contribution towards the noble cause. It's my reminder to my fellow volunteers, and my fellow students, those who call, IM or even email (even though people rarely do that any more!), that you are truly not alone. Every small effort clears the fog to let the light through.
