How can I contact Nightline?

Our telephone number is 020 7631 0101 and our email address is listening@nightline.org.uk. You can also contact us for free on Skype.

When can I contact Nightline?

The London Nightline telephone service is open from 6pm til 8am every night of term, but it is possible to email us at anytime during the day. All emails are answered within 48 hours.

Who will I be speaking to?

You'll be speaking to another London student. They may be any age, from any college in London. All Nightline volunteers have undergone extensive training to provide non-judgemental and confidential support.

What can I talk to the volunteer about?

Anything! You can call Nightline if you want to talk something through, if you need the email address of your university library or if you simply need to rant. Nightline volunteers will not give you advice as they are not trained on specific issues, but we will listen and talk through your situation with you. As we are a student-run service, we cater particularly to the needs of students, and won't patronise or judge you.

How often can I call Nightline?

You can call us as often as you need our assistance.

How can I become a volunteer?

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for London Nightline, you can email us at volunteer@nightline.org.uk or register on the website.

Is the service confidential?

Yes, Nightline is committed to ensuring that our service remains totally confidential. You are not under any obligation to give Nightline any personal details to use the service; you may remain totally anonymous if you wish.

What information does Nightline keep on its callers?

None of your personal details will be kept on record. Nightline is obliged to keep limited call statistics (number of calls, gender of callers, category of call) to show to its funding institutions. However, these could in no way lead to identification of a caller. You can view our caller statistics in our Annual Report. Nightline is also registered as a Data Controller with the Information Commissioner’s Office. If you would like more information about our Data Protection Policies, then contact us through the feedback form.

Can I choose to speak to a male or female volunteer?

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee to always have both a male and a female volunteer available. For reasons of confidentiality, we are also unable to say when either may next be available.

Will I be able to get in touch with a particular volunteer again?

Nightline maintains the strictest volunteer confidentiality, so the volunteers will not be able to disclose personal information or the date of their next duty. Nightline is a listening, not a befriending service.

What should I do when Nightline is closed?

Outside Nightline's phone hours, you can still email us on listening@nightline.org.uk. If you would like to speak to someone, try the Samaritans, or contact any of the services listed on our External Links page. Nightline is intended as an out-of-hours complement to your University's Welfare service, so do consider contacting them as well.

I'm not very confident speaking English. Can I still contact Nightline?

Our volunteers will do their best whatever your level of English. Do not be afraid to take your time, or to email if you are more confident with the written word. If you are a Japanese speaker, you may like to consider calling the Samaritans' Japanese language line on 020 7287 5493.

I’m not studying at one of the affiliated institutions. Can I still call London Nightline?

Our volunteers will not ask you which college you attend unless you choose to tell them. They certainly won't ask you to put the phone down if you say you are not from one of the affiliated institutions! However, we may not be able to provide you with accurate factual information about the welfare services at your university, so if your own college has a Nightline, you should call them first. For information on other Nightlines, visit the National Nightline website.

How is Nightline run?

All Nightline's activities are overseen by a board of trustees. Its day-to-day running is in the hands of a full-time Co-ordinator and two part-time staff. Nightline's volunteers also take an active part in the running of the organisation, for which purpose there is an Executive committee of volunteers. Nightline has around 70 volunteers at any one time.
