As a volunteer for London Nightline, you will receive comprehensive training in listening and helpline skills, plus continuous support from other volunteers and trained support staff. You do not need any prior experience. All we ask is that you are non-judgemental, empathetic and can adapt to the vast variety of calls we receive.
Nightline recruits volunteers once a year in October. Every year many of our volunteers graduate so we train up to 50 new recruits to help us continue to be there for students who need us.
To become a volunteer you will need to:
- attend our Introductory Talk, which takes place at the beginning of October each year
- submit an initial registration form and later fill in a more detailed application
- attend 9 hours of training, split into 3 3-hour sessions which take place on evenings and weekends
- go through a selection process involving skills appraisal, reference checks and an individual interview
- if selected, attend a further full weekend (16 hours minimum) of training
As a volunteer you will be expected to:
- complete a minimum of 4 over-night duties (shifts) per term i.e. 12 per academic year
- commit to at least 1 weekend duty per term
- attend 3 ongoing training sessions over the course of the year
