What affiliation means

London Nightline is funded by colleges and unions in London who agree to pay it a yearly fee to support its activities. In return, Nightline publicises its services to the students of those institutions and ensures that its service is run to the very highest standards.

As such, the affiliated institution will be confident not only that this valuable service is available to its students, but that every effort is being made to raise their awareness of their welfare options. Nightline understands the increasing difficulties of student life in London, which place increasing pressure of Universities to provide wide-ranging welfare services. The organisation thus also aims also to enable universities to fulfil obligation regarding the Disabilites and Discrimination Act, which requires higher education institutions to provide welfare support to their students. In the event of any questions regarding the quality of this service provision, the fact that students have 24-hour access to some sort of support, thanks to Nightline, ensures that Universities are going the extra mile in terms of student support, and can demonstrate this.

As a general rule, the College and Union of an institution will affiliate separately to Nightline. The college will pay £0.26, and the Union £0.10 per student. There are several reasons for this. It allows the institution to spread the costs of Nightline and responsibility for communicating with the service. Nightline produces large amounts of publicity materials each year which is very costly when thousands of students are involved; the dual affiliation fee reflects this consideration. It also ensures that Nightline has full and open contact with representatives of both areas of the institution, and will be involved in as many events and initiatives as possible, as these can operate quite separately between the Union and the College welfare services.

Nightline does not ask its callers which institution they are calling from, as this would be a breach of confidentiality and trust. Therefore, we cannot give our affiliated institutions statistics on the volume of calls from their particular student body. Awareness of the service can however be measured internally, and as Nightline is there as a port in a storm at any point during a student's career, the aim of our publicity campaigns is to keep awareness at as high a level as possible so that a student will always know Nightline is there, even if they never have reason to call.

If you are considering affiliating, or if you are already affiliated, please refer to the relevant section of the website. For information on Nightline's activities over the year, you may refer to our Annual Review, or the Nightline News section.
